SOFIA — Anti-Gypsy demonstrations that began during the weekend continued to spread across Bulgaria on Tuesday evening in response to the killing of a man by a minibus whose driver is linked to a man accused of being a Roma crime boss.
Prime Minister Boyko M. Borisov and his main political rival, President Georgi S. Parvanov, made a show of bipartisan unity Monday in visiting Katunitsa, the village where the killing happened on Friday. Protesters had burned houses and cars belonging to the family of the supposed crime boss, Kiril Rashkov, while demanding that the authorities “deport” the family from the village, which has a population of 2,300.
“Ethnic peace is the only way to guarantee Bulgaria’s prosperity,” Mr. Borisov told a meeting of government ministers on Tuesday. “Every other action guarantees the failure of the country and falling into deep isolation.”

Hundreds Rise Against ‚Roma Crime‘ in Bulgaria
Several hundred people have joined the parade against what they believe is widespread Roma crime in Bulgaria on Saturday.
The gathering of the protesters took place in front of the National Palace of Culture in downtown Sofia and continued through the Vitosha boulevard, Darik radio has informed.
It was the far-right Bulgarian National Union that organized the rally. According to the Bulgarian National radio, some 1500 people attended it.
The „contra-parade'“s organizers had called for a peaceful protest, one that would exclude drunk citizens and racist slogans. No accidents have been reported during the rally.
Tensions in Bulgaria were sparked by the September 23 murder of Bulgarian youngster, Angel Petrov, 19, who was deliberately run over by a minivan, driven, according to witnesses, by one of the relatives of notorious Roam boss from Katunitsa, Kiril Rashkov AKA Tsar Kiro. The murder led to massive protests of the ethnic Bulgarians in the village, where Tsar Kiro’s mansions are located. They culminated Saturday night into the burning of Rashkov’s properties by football hooligans from Plovdiv, which is near to Katunitsa, and by football club fans from the capital Sofia and the southern city of Stara Zagora.
From Monday to Thursday night, protests followed in many major Bulgarian cities, including the capital Sofia. Nearly 350 people in total were arrested by the police after the two nights of rallies that involved what has been perceived as ethnic hatred.
Bulgarian authorities have frozen Rashkov’s assets and property while he is investigated on tax evasion charges, the revenue agency has confirmed. Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Kalin Georgiev told the morning broadcast of Nova TV channel Wednesday that Rashkov, AKA Tsar Kiro, has been arrested. On Friday the Regional Court in the town of Asenovgrad decided to keep Rashkov behind bars.

Bulgaria swept by anti-Roma protests
Mobilized by Facebook posters which successfully evaded anti-hatred censorship on the Web, thousands of masked pro-nationalist youths marched through central Sofia Saturday to demand that the Bulgarian authorities take tough action against Gypsy-bred crime. Police in full riot gear stood by but did not intervene. Fortunately, officers prevented the marchers from reaching Sofia’s Roma-populated neighbourhoods. The Bulgarian Roma leader Tsvetelin Kynchev had advised Sofia Gypsies to stay indoors at the time of the march.
Bulgaria’s latest wave of anti-Roma unrest started on September 23rd after a posh car driven by the Gypsy mafia boss Kirill Rashkov hit and killed a 19-year-old ethnic Bulgarian boy named Angel Petrov in an incident near Plovdiv. Adding insult to injury, Rashkov immediately issued threats against the family of the dead youth. Rioting erupted, in which radical youths attacked Roma houses and clashed with police. Hundreds, including Rashkov, are now being held.

Police Bust More Than 100 in Bulgaria for Violence in ‚Roma Protests‘ Night
More than 100 people in total have been arrested by the police in several Bulgarian cities after a wave of small-scale but vigorous rallies Monday night.
The protesters rallied against the murder of 19-year-old Angel Petrov in the village of Katunitsa by associates of notorious Roma boss Kiril Rashkov, aka Tsar Kiro – but also because of the „Roma issue“, i.e. what they see as a „privileged situation“ of the Roma minority in Bulgaria.

Roma auslösen konnte
Am vergangenen Wochenende brannte[1] im südbulgarischen Katuniza ein
aufgebrachter Mob Häuser und Autos der Minderheit der Roma nieder.
Seitdem drohen rassistisch motivierte Demonstrationen[2] und mitunter
gewalttätige Proteste[3], die in etlichen Ortschaften in Bulgarien
stattfinden, in eine landesweite Welle von Pogromen[4] gegen diese
marginalisierte Minderheit umzuschlagen.
Was war geschehen? Am Freitag, den 23. September, verstarb der
Jugendliche Angel Petrov bei einem Autounfall in dem südbulgarischen
Dorf Katuniza. Der Minibus, der den 19-jährigen Dorfbewohner überfuhr,

Heftige Krawalle: Bulgaren jagen Sinti und Roma aus Dorf
Im bulgarischen Dorf Katunitsa kam es in der Nacht zum Sonntag zu den schwersten Ausschreitungen in Bulgarien seit Jahren. Nachdem ein 19-jähriger Dorfbewohner durch Sinti und Roma bei einem Verkerhsunfall tödlich verletzt wurde, brannten ein aufgebrachter Mob Häuser nieder.

Nationalisten hetzen mit Hitler-Gruß gegen Roma
Lange war Bulgarien ein Paradebeispiel für ethnische Toleranz. Nun bedrohen Nationalisten und ihr Hass gegen die Roma-Minderheit diesen Frieden.
Noch im Mai hatte UN-Generalsekretär Ban Ki-moon Bulgarien als Beispiel für das friedliche Zusammenleben verschiedener Kulturen und Religionen auf dem Balkan gelobt. Das EU-Land genießt diesen guten Ruf schon seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Damals hatte es seine 50.000 Juden nicht an Nazi-Deutschland ausgeliefert. Nach dem Ende des Kommunismus 1989 wurde ein gewaltsamer Konflikt zwischen der slawischen Mehrheit und der türkischen Minderheit vermieden. Die Türken erhielten alle Bürgerrechte und gründeten ihre eigene Partei.
Rassisten skandieren „Zigeuner zu Seife“
Die Integration der Roma ist dagegen offensichtlich gescheitert. Nationalisten, Rocker sowie Fußballfans sind plötzlich mit bisher unbekannter Schärfe auf die Roma-Minderheit losgegangen. Rassistische Parolen wie „Zigeuner zu Seife“ wurden immer wieder skandiert. Die Rechtsextremisten werfen der Minderheit hasserfüllt vor, auf Kosten der slawischen Mehrheit zu leben. Offiziell haben sich 300.000 Menschen als Roma deklariert. Nach Schätzungen stellen sie jedoch von den insgesamt 7,3 Millionen Einwohnern mehr als eine halbe Million.
Mit wenigen Ausnahmen gehören die Roma zu den Ärmsten der Armen und sind tatsächlich auf Sozialhilfe angewiesen. Die hohe Arbeitslosigkeit treibt viele in die Kriminalität. Sie leben in eigenen Wohnvierteln am Stadtrand unter miserablen Bedingungen.

Bulgarian Skinheads Stage Pathetic Anti-Roma Protest
Just 30 persons attented a self-styled protest against „Roma privileges“ in front of the Bulgarian Parliament Sunday afternoon, out of some 14,000 who had stated their attendance on Facebook.
Some of the participants bore the blatant signs of skinhead groups, with all of them in their teens or twenties.
The youths did not specify any demands whatsoever, did not claim allegiance to a party or organization and refused to speak to the media.
Only one girl, aged 18, voiced an opinion by speaking to the BGNES agency, extravagantly putting the blame on the government and not on the Roma community.
„Those in power are to blame for everything. They’re washing their hands with the Roma. If the Roma were educated and had good jobs, we wouldn’t have such problems,“ said the teenager.
Sunday’s protest had no official permission by the Sofia Municipality. It had raised an outcry from Bulgarian rights organizations.

Rechtsradikale greifen in Sofia Roma an und verletzen einen schwer
Rechtsradikale Skinheads haben in der bulgarischen Hauptstadt Sofia zwei junge Roma angegriffen und dabei einen von ihnen schwer verletzt. Wie die städtischen Behörden am Freitag mitteilten, ereignete sich der Angriff am Donnerstagabend in einem Bus im Stadtzentrum. Der Schwerverletzte sei mit einem Schädelbruch und einer Gehirnverletzung ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert worden, befinde sich aber nicht in Lebensgefahr. Das andere Opfer habe keine schweren Verletzungen erlitten. Angehörige der Roma-Minderheit haben in Bulgarien unter Diskriminierungen zu leiden und sind immer wieder das Ziel gewalttätiger Überfälle.
