Eine Legislativinitiative des liberaldemokratischen Abgeordneten Silviu Prigoana, derzufolge künftig im offiziellen Sprachgebrauch der Begriff „Roma“ mit dem Terminus „Zigeuner“ ersetzt werden soll (vgl. dazu frühere Medienkampagnen), wird derzeit von der Regierung erörtert. Eine Stellungnahme der Exekutive zu besagter Gesetzesinitiative steht zwar noch aus, muss allerdings demnächst abgegeben werden, berichtete die Nachrichtenagentur Mediafax. Die Rumänische Akademie hat das Legislativprojekt bereits abgesegnet. Die Gesetzesinitiative war im Monat September im Senat, dem Oberhaus des rumänischen Parlaments, eingebracht worden, nachdem Staatschef Băsescu erklärt hatte, dass seiner Meinung nach der Begriff „Roma“ im Ausland für Verwechslungen zwischen Rumänen und den Angehörigen der Roma-Minderheit sorge. Hohes Schmerzensgeld für Roma nach Polizeigewalt
Straßburg (dpa) – Die rumänische Regierung muss drei Roma, die von Polizisten schwer verletzt worden waren, insgesamt 150 000 Euro Schmerzensgeld zahlen. 130 000 Euro sprach der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte (EGMR) am Dienstag in Straßburg einem zur Tatzeit 19-Jährigen zu, den ein Polizist bei einer Verfolgungsjagd 2000 in Bukarest mit einem Kopfschuss schwer verletzt hatte. Der junge Mann blieb nach seiner Genesung halb gelähmt. Den zwei weiteren Roma, Zeugen des Vorfalls, sprach der Gerichtshof wegen menschenunwürdiger Behandlung auf der Polizeiwache zusammen 20 000 Euro zu. Nach Darstellung der rumänischen Regierung hatte der Polizist in Notwehr gehandelt, weil der junge Roma ihn mit einem Messer bedroht hatte. Die Richter befanden, dass der Polizist unnötige Gewalt angewendet habe.

Romanian Senate rejects bill to officially rename Roma „Gypsies“
The Romanian Senate has voted down a bill to officially rename the Roma minority „Gypsies“. Romanian press agency Mediafax reports senators voted 51 against the bill and 27 in favor, with five abstentions.
The bill claimed the change was needed because of the similarity between the name of the country of Romania („Romania“ in Romanian) and that of the Roma („Romi“ in Romanian). It also argued that the term „Gypsies“ („Tsigani“ in Romanian) is more widespread in the country. The Associated Press reports that two parliamentary committees endorsed the change last week.
Roma associations did not like the idea from the start, as they consider the label of „Gypsies“ to be abusive. In their view the term labels the Roma as a nation that is poor, rootless and uneducated.

Basescu denounces Roma bill

13/12/2010 – Traian Basescu, the Romanian president, has denounced a bill before the country’s parliament to rename the country’s 1.5m Roma minority internally as “Tigani”, or gypsies, saying he would refuse to sign it into law.
The controversial bill, put forward by Silviu Prigoana, a member of the centre-right PDL party that is the biggest in Romania’s two-party coalition, would ban Romanian institutions from using the word Roma. CCSB survey: 36% of the Romanians consider gypsies could become a threat for the country
68% of the Romanians consider that the gypsies do most crime, the main causes being considered lack of education and bad habits, a CCSB survey for the Association Pro Democratia showed. According to the study, 36% of the interviewees think that the gypsies will represent, in the future, a threat for the country, while 33% consider the gypsy communities a direct threat for the Romanians. At the same time, 26% of the interviewees consider that the majority of the gypsies are criminals and should be put to jail.
